The York Chapter met 2/17/04--10 attendees At our February meeting, we reviewed our list of possible goals from the January meeting. Kathleen reported that research is ongoing, thank to her talented interns, on the areas of recidivism, best practices, etc. The information for county prisons in PA is not available in a complete form due to differences in reporting practices. We added a few more research topics to the list including:
What % of YCP prisoners max out vs. being paroled? Case load of parole officers Prison board meeting details
We also agreed to explore the possibility of:
Working in collaboration with parole officers to reduce recidivism Encouraging employers to hire ex cons Holding a few public meetings/yr with guest speakers Developing a booklet/document for inmates who are about to be released with info on what's available Publishing a state of the criminal justice system, focusing on detention, here in York County
Notes from January 2004 Meeting We brainstormed a list of possible goals/issues that are important to us, including:
Educating the public Stop growing the prison industry Shift the focus to rehabilitation & reintegration Exploring alternatives to detention Expanding work release opportunities Increase availability of mental health services Benchmarking programming Voter registration Engaging others in the prison society's activities
